Sound affects the human body on a deep cellular level. All of the sounds we hear throughout the day (alarms, music, traffic, etc.) vibrate every cell of our body, whether we are aware of it or not. In recent years, studies have suggested that Mozart’s sonatas have a positive impact on cell division rates, the frequency of epileptic seizures, and the size of human breast cancer cells. Although sound has the ability be healing, it can also be detrimental to our health. “Noise pollution” (irritating background sounds like those of trains and planes) can lead to high blood pressure, increased stress hormone levels, slower brain development in children, and even heart attacks. But there is a cure! Scientists have recently proven that silence has profound, regenerative effects on the body and mind.

“In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you.” – Mother Teresa

Reduce Stress & Tension

A study which explored the effects of noise pollution on students attending school near the Munich airport showed that children developed a stress response which triggered them to ignore the sounds of nearby planes. Although the stress response helped the kids tune out distracting background noise, it also caused them to ignore other noises (like speech) and reduced their cognitive function. While excessive noise leads to stress and tension, silence has the opposite effect. A 2006 study showed that two minutes of pure silence was more beneficial than listening to “relaxing” music, as determined by improved blood pressure and blood circulation in the brains of test participants.

Regenerate Brain Cells & Improve Memory

Scientists analyzing the effects of different sounds on the brains of mice had originally intended for silence to be the control in their study, but it soon became the most intriguing part of their research. Two hours of silence increased the rate of cell growth in the rodent’s hippocampi (the part of the brain which regulates learning, memory, and emotions). Now, preliminary research suggests that silence is therapeutic for conditions like Depression and Alzheimer’s, disorders which reduce the rate of cell regeneration in the hippocampus.

“Through the portals of silence, the healing sun of wisdom and peace will shine upon you.” – Paramahansa Yogananda

There are even spiritual benefits to being immersed in silence. Many saints and sages have claimed that no matter how loud the mind may become while sitting in meditation, the noise will eventually subside and your consciousness will awaken to it’s true nature.

Peace and quiet is getting harder to come by. Silence, combined with Hatha Yoga and healthy vegetarian nutrition will enhance your healing process.
